Frequently Asked Questions

We produce frames in days, not weeks. 

Therefore we aim to get your order to you within 6 working days - that’s 5 days to make it, 1 day to ship. 

All our frames are custom made by hand, uniquely for you. This means that during busy periods we can take longer than 5 days, but we will always keep you up to date with where you order is, and when we expect it to arrive.

All our frames are sent with 24 hour delivery, either with DPD or Royal Mail, depending on size. 

Orders over £100 come with free delivery for all UK mainland addresses (excluding Highlands and islands), and for all other orders we charge £5.00 for shipping.

If your order is urgent - for example you're trying to give a gift for a birthday or special occasion - get in touch with us at hello@limner.co.uk and we will do our best to hit your deadline.

Not just yet. We’re working on it, but for now we’re limited to the Great Britain and the Channel Islands.

All our frames are made to order based on your specifications. As a result we can’t accept returns. 

However, if you’re not happy with your order for whatever reason we want to make it right - so please get in touch with us at hello@limner.co.uk

We stand by the quality of our frames and our printing. If you’re not happy for whatever reason, then we want to make sure we can fix it for you - so please get in touch with us at hello@limner.co.uk

If you can let us know within 30 minutes then we will be able to cancel / amend your order for you - please email us with your order number at hello@limner.co.uk. 

We start making your frames as quickly as we can - so if you want to make any changes more than 30 minutes after placing your order please get in touch with us and if the team hasn’t yet started making it we’ll be able to amend it for you.

We understand that measuring in particular can be a big worry. We find that due to the tolerances we build in, frames not fitting properly is actually quite rare. 

However, accidents do happen and we’re here to help. If you’ve measured incorrectly (plus or minus 50mm) then we’ll get you a correctly sized frame for no extra cost. Just drop us an email and we’ll fix it. Email at hello@limner.co.uk with details of your order and we’ll pick it up with you.

Yes - you can preview your frame before ordering.

Our design tool lets you upload your artwork and see exactly how it will look across different frames, mounts and sizes before you buy.

We currently support digital photos and artworks as well as paper-based pieces.

We don’t yet support canvas items or 3D objects (shoes, scarves, football tops) on our site, but we’re planning to introduce this in the next few months. If you’d like to be notified of updates you can sign up here.

Yes, most unusual or oversized items can be framed.

Our standard range goes up to 1220mm × 915mm, but we can often go beyond this. If you have something specific in mind, just get in touch.

Choose a frame colour that complements your artwork rather than matching it exactly.

Black frames create contrast and a modern look, while natural wood or white frames feel softer and more subtle. Colour can add more pop or interest, and a more contemporary feel.

It’s best to start with the outcome you’re trying to achieve, and where you want to put it. 

Simple, flat frames create a clean, modern look and work well for most prints and photos. More detailed or ornate frames support pieces that deserve a stronger presence.

Thinner frames create a more minimal look and support smaller or more delicate pieces where you don’t want to distract the eye.

Wider frames add more visual weight and work well for larger pieces where you want to give them more presence on the wall.

If you’re unsure, experiment with our previewer and try a medium-width frame (around 25-35mm wide)

In most cases acrylic is the better choice - and is why modern museums favour it. 

It’s lighter and safer (it won’t shatter), whilst it can offer the same level of UV protection and clarity as glass.

That’s why we use high-quality, UV-protective acrylic as standard in all our frames.

In most cases adding a mount is the better choice. 

A mount holds an artwork away from the glazing, helping prevent moisture damage over time. It also creates space around the piece, giving balance and presence.

You can skip a mount if you prefer a more minimal feel or if the piece isn’t particularly valuable.

You can adjust the mount by changing its colour, width and style. 

A wider, neutral mount creates a more classic, gallery-style look, while a thinner mount feels more minimal. You can also experiment with colour to subtly complement or contrast with your artwork.

Our preview tool lets you see these changes in real time, so you can try different options and choose what looks best.

We use carefully selected materials designed to protect your artwork and deliver a high-quality result.

Our wooden frames come from FSC certified suppliers, our glazing is UV-protective acrylic that is both recycled and recyclable, and our mounts are made to recognised industry standards to help prevent discolouration over time.

We design every frame to protect your artwork as well as present it.

Our mounts hold the artwork away from the glazing to prevent moisture damage, while our UV-protective acrylic helps reduce fading from light exposure. We also use conservation-grade materials to minimise discolouration over time.

Our frames are handmade in Britain in our workshop.

This allows us to maintain consistent quality and ensure each frame is made specifically for you and your artwork.

We’ve taken a considered approach across our entire supply chain, looking at each material and process to reduce impact wherever we can.

We source all our frames from FSC-certified partners and prioritise certified products across our range. Each frame is made to order, which reduces waste compared to mass production. We use UV-protective acrylic that is both recycled and recyclable, and mounts made from sustainably sourced materials.

Our cardboard packaging is FSC-certified and designed to protect your frame in transit, and we use recycled and recyclable materials wherever possible. There are still areas we’re trying to improve, such as finding alternatives to protective plastics like bubble wrap without increasing damage and waste.

Not just yet, but we’re working on this service. Especially because it will allow us to frame many more things that matter, such as treasured objects.

Our frames come with 99% UV protective glass and mounts that protect against aging.

The best way you can take care of your artwork is to hang it in places where it is unlikely to be affected by moisture (for example, damp walls), or other contaminants like smoke from cooking or fires.

Only clean / dust your frame and glazing with a microfibre cloth, and avoid using harsh cleaning products on them. 

Otherwise, our frames are built to last, and don’t need extensive ongoing care.

Honestly? Until you get bored of it. Our frames are built to last, with UV protective acrylic glazing and high-quality wood.

Yes - we use flexible tabs to secure the back of the frame, which will allow you to change the artwork or mount within it.

We’re working on this option, including gift wrapping and special boxes, but it’s not available just yet.

To print and frame a digital photo or print we accept the following file types:

• JPEG
• PNG

We don’t currently support the following file types:

• GIF
• PDF
• TIFF

We accept files from 1mb to 100mb. Unfortunately anything below 1mb will result in low-quality prints.

Once you upload your file, then based on its resolution our website will let you know the maximum size that you can print it at whilst still achieving a good quality print resolution. 

The most important factor in getting a good quality image at the right size is the “dots per inch” (DPI) that you would have at any given size / resolution. The best images will be produced by DPI a 200 or above, whilst the minimum acceptable is 100 DPI.

We’ve grouped our papers into three tiers to make choosing easier, especially if you’re new to printing. Rather than focusing on technical paper terms we’ve organised them based on how the final framed print will look and feel.

Each tier contains one ideal option for artwork and one for photography.

They can broadly be described as follows:

• Our standard papers are versatile, everyday choices. 

• Fine Art papers offer heavier-weight, gallery-quality papers with richer texture, depth, and a more tactile finish. 

• Our Premium option is designed for maximum visual impact, combining the depth and luxury of fine art paper with enhanced vibrancy and contrast.

When choosing a paper, the most important considerations are:

• Whether you prefer a matte or slight sheen finish

• If you want a smooth or textured surface

• Whether the print is photography, artwork, or both

• How you’d like the finished piece to feel when framed and displayed

If you’re unsure, matte papers tend to suit artwork and softer tones, while lustre or pearl finishes are often preferred for vibrant photography and high-contrast images.

Epson Enhanced Matte (189gsm)

A smooth, bright white matte paper with no surface shine, ideal for everyday photographic prints, illustrations, and artwork behind glass. It produces rich colour and sharp detail with a clean, modern finish, making it a great all-round choice for most framed prints and posters.

Epson Luster (260gsm)

A classic semi-gloss photographic paper with a subtle sheen that enhances colour, contrast, and depth. Particularly well suited to portraits, weddings, travel photography, and vibrant images where you want a more traditional “photo print” appearance without the high glare of gloss paper.

Fine Art Paper (+£5)

Hahnemühle Studio Enhanced (210gsm) 

A premium matte paper designed for photography, portfolios, exhibition prints, and modern artwork. Its smooth surface and crisp detail give images a refined gallery-style appearance while keeping colours natural and glare-free. A great step up if you want a more professional finish without moving into heavily textured fine art papers.

Fotospeed Studio Etching Rag (285gsm) 

A textured cotton fine art paper with a soft matte finish and a subtle handcrafted feel. Ideal for artwork, black and white photography, painterly images, and prints intended to feel more artistic or tactile when framed. The gentle texture adds depth and character while maintaining excellent detail.

Premium Gallery Paper (+£10)

Hahnemühle German Etching (310gsm) 

A heavyweight museum-quality fine art paper with a rich velvety matte finish and pronounced texture. Best suited to fine art photography, digital artwork, and statement pieces where texture and depth are part of the presentation. Its luxurious surface gives framed prints a premium gallery feel with exceptional tonal detail and no glare.

Hahnemühle Photo Rag Pearl (320gsm)

A luxurious cotton fine art paper with a subtle pearl-lustre sheen, combining the richness of traditional photo paper with the depth and softness of fine art paper. Perfect for vibrant colour photography, contemporary artwork, and high-contrast images where you want deeper blacks, enhanced sharpness, and a truly premium framed finish. Especially effective for large statement prints and modern interiors.
