Custom picture framing is the process of creating a frame to the exact dimensions of your artwork, rather than fitting your artwork into a standard ready-made size. It allows the frame style, mount, glazing and finish to be tailored to the piece, and is typically handmade to order. Custom framing and bespoke framing mean essentially the same thing.

Most ready-made framing forces a compromise. You either crop the artwork, accept gaps inside the frame, or settle for proportions that do not quite work for the space. Custom framing removes the compromise. The frame is built around the artwork rather than the other way round.

How custom framing differs from ready-made

Ready-made frames are produced in fixed standard sizes and finishes for general retail. They suit standard print sizes, temporary framing, and budget-driven decisions. Custom framing is the opposite: each frame is made to order, sized exactly to the piece, and built with materials and proportions chosen for that specific artwork or object, and importantly: for you.

The difference shows up in four places. Fit is the most obvious: a custom frame matches your artwork to the millimetre, with a controlled overlap to hold the piece securely. Design is the second, because with custom framing you choose the frame profile, mount colour and width, glazing type, and overall proportions. Protection is the third, since custom framing typically uses higher-grade materials including UV-protective glazing and acid-free mounts that help preserve artwork over time. Quality is the fourth: made-to-order construction tends to produce a more consistent finish than mass production. And maybe we can add a secret fifth: Joy - there’s really nothing like seeing something come alive in a frame you’ve chosen and designed, that has been created just for you.

When should you choose custom picture framing?

Custom framing makes most sense in five situations. The first is non-standard artwork sizes, where a ready-made frame would always involve a compromise. The second is valuable or sentimental pieces, where conservation-grade materials and a frame designed around the piece protect it properly. The third is design-led interiors, where the frame becomes part of the room rather than just something hung on it. The fourth is gallery walls, where consistency (or consistent inconsistency…) of proportion and style across several pieces matters. The fifth is oversized or unusual artwork, which needs stronger materials and better proportions, and often will not fit standard sizes at all.

If you are framing a standard photo print on a budget, ready-made is completely fine and acceptable. But if you are framing something that matters, something that you really want to stand and and live with you in your space in a way the elevates the whole piece, then custom framing is usually the better answer.

What can you customise?

The four main variables are the frame, the mount, the glazing, and the overall proportions. Frame style covers the profile, the width, the material and the finish - it’s probably what most people think about first (and last) when they consider framing. But the mount can be just as important: it’s the border between the artwork and the frame, and although it’s often given less consideration it can be critical for both style and protection. It protects the piece but it can also change the proportions of the overall composition, and therefore the impression it makes. A neutral off-white mount around 50mm is a classic, reliable default for most prints and photographs - which is why it’s a pre-set on our site. Our full guide to picture mounts covers this in detail. Proportions are the most overlooked variable: changing the mount width or frame width can substantially change how the finished piece feels on the wall.

Custom or bespoke: what's the difference?

In practice the two terms mean the same thing: a frame made specifically for your artwork rather than purchased ready-made. 'Custom' is the more common term and suggests accessible made-to-order framing. 'Bespoke' carries slightly more traditional, handcrafted associations, which is why it’s becoming an increasingly popular term across a whole range of industries at the moment. At Limner we use both, because framing should combine the accessibility of modern custom framing with the craftsmanship of the traditional bespoke approach. But in reality there is no meaningful difference.

How much does custom picture framing cost?

Because it is made to order, custom framing costs more than buying a ready-made frame. How much more will really depend on where (and to whom) you go to. At Limner we believe in reducing the complexity around custom framing so that you can focus on what matters. Our pricing is structured in size bands, based on the size of the item you’re framing, not the frame itself. When you enter the size of your piece, whether that’s a unique or standard size (e.g. A4, A3, etc.) we’ll automatically work out which band it belongs in, along with a single, transparent price, so you know what your frame will cost as soon as you know your size: whichever frame style you choose.

Every frame is handmade in Britain using material FSC-certified suppliers and made to order rather than produced in advance, which keeps the cost predictable while avoiding the waste of mass production. You can preview your frame and see the price as you design it.

How to order a custom picture frame

Enter the dimensions of the piece itself, not any existing frame or mount around it. Choose your frame, mount and glazing. Preview the finished piece in real time. The frame is then handmade in Britain and delivered to your door. If you’ve chosen to print a photo or artwork file, we’ll print and frame it for you so that it’s ready to unwrap and hang.

If you are new to custom framing, the simplest starting point is a neutral frame with a 50mm off-white mount and UV-protective acrylic glazing. That combination works for almost any print or photograph, and you can refine from there. A ready-made frame is functional. A custom frame is intentional.
