For most modern picture framing, UV-protective acrylic is the best all-round choice: it offers comparable clarity to glass, is significantly lighter, will not shatter, and can provide up to 99% UV protection.

Glass vs acrylic: which is better for picture frames?

For the majority of modern framing, acrylic is the better choice. It matches glass for optical clarity while being a fraction of the weight, far more impact resistant, and is able to deliver up to 99% UV protection. Glass remains useful for smaller pieces where weight is not a concern.

Weight is the most practical difference. A large frame with glass becomes a real safety consideration; the same frame with acrylic is straightforward to handle, ship and install. For frames above A2, acrylic is almost always the better answer. Clarity used to be the argument for glass, but high-quality acrylic now offers excellent clarity including reduced-glare options, and in most situations the visual difference is minimal. So really, the question instead becomes: why choose glass at all?

Why many traditional framers still prefer glass

Despite the practical case for acrylic, plenty of long-established UK framers still default to glass. Most of it comes down to two things. The first is tools and training: if you learned to frame thirty years ago, you learned to cut and handle glass, and that is what your workshop is set up for. Acrylic can be slightly harder to work with cleanly, and switching workflows mid-career is rarely worth the effort. 


The second is perception: people associate weight with quality, so a frame with glass is heavier and feels more substantial, and framers tend to follow customer preference rather than challenge it. Neither reason has much to do with the actual performance of modern acrylic, which has improved significantly over the last twenty years.

What is museum quality glazing?

Museum quality glazing is the highest specification of clear glazing available for framing. It combines very high UV protection, typically 99%, with anti-reflective treatment that almost eliminates glare and exceptional optical clarity. The result is glazing that is almost invisible when viewing the artwork while protecting it from the two biggest causes of long-term damage: UV fading and obscuring glare. It is available in both glass and acrylic forms, with the acrylic version usually preferred for larger or more valuable pieces because of weight and impact considerations.

What is non-reflective glass and when does it help?

Non-reflective glass reduces the glare and reflections that can make framed artwork hard to view in bright rooms. Etched non-reflective glass has a textured surface that diffuses light but can slightly soften the image, while anti-reflective coated glass uses optical coatings to reduce reflection without affecting clarity. It is most useful for artwork hung opposite windows, under strong lighting, or where the viewing angle is awkward. Modern acrylic can also be specified with anti-reflective properties, combining reduced glare with the safety and weight benefits of acrylic.

UV protection and why it matters

UV exposure is the biggest preventable cause of damage to framed artwork, causing fading, yellowing and the breakdown of inks and pigments over time. The damage is cumulative and irreversible. Modern acrylic routinely offers 99% UV protection as standard, while UV-protective glass is usually an upgrade. For artwork with sentimental, financial or archival value, UV protection should be a default rather than an afterthought. The cost difference is small compared with the cost of an irreplaceable piece fading over a decade on a sunlit wall.
