To hang a heavy frame safely, fix it at two points into solid material, using fixings appropriate for well above the frame’s actual weight. Start by working out what your wall is made of, be it  plasterboard or masonry or other, because that decides everything else. Where you can, fix into a stud or into the masonry itself, using proper plasterboard anchors for hollow walls and matched plugs and screws for solid ones. Spread the load across two points so the frame sits level and cannot pivot, and as a rule choose fixings rated to around three times the frame's weight (the “three-times” rule). For anything over 10kg, or any piece you would hate to lose, a French cleat or mirror plates give you more security and make the frame easy to lift down again. The execution needs care, but the principle is simple: know your wall, then match your hardware to it.

Hanging a heavy frame looks more daunting than it is. The stakes feel high, especially when the frame holds something irreplaceable, and a frame that slips or tips is a miserable thing to come home to. But there is no great secret or mystery when it comes to doing it properly. Follow a sensible order, choose your materials with a bit of care, and you will be fine.

Understand What "Heavy" Actually Means

Weight is relative to the method holding it up. A 3kg frame on a single hook in plasterboard is heavy. The same 3kg frame fixed into brick at two points is more than ok. So "heavy" shifts depending on your wall and your hardware rather than being a fixed number.

As a rough guide, frames over 5kg deserve a proper think. Anything above 10kg wants two fixings into solid material, or a specialist approach. Frames with glass and deep mounts can run past 15kg or 20kg, and at that point you should be planning the fixing with care rather than reaching for a simple hook.

A frame's weight comes from several things: the timber of the moulding, the glass or acrylic, the depth of the mountboard and the artwork behind it, and whether you have chosen conservation-grade materials or a lighter specification. It’s always worth checking the weight of a frame by weighing it on a household scale where you can, but if you can’t, assume it is heavier than it looks and feels, and fix accordingly.

Identify Your Wall Type First

This is the most important decision you will make. More frames come down from a mismatch between wall and fixing than from anything else.

Plasterboard walls, also called stud walls, are common in modern homes and flats. They are a gypsum board faced with paper, fixed to timber or metal studs spaced roughly 400mm to 600mm apart. The plasterboard itself holds almost no weight. The load has to go into the studs behind it, or into anchors made specifically for hollow walls.

Solid masonry walls, usually brick or stone, are typical of older and period properties. These take fixings directly into the masonry, which is far stronger than plasterboard.

To tell them apart, tap along the wall. Solid walls sound dull and consistent. Plasterboard sounds hollow between the studs and more solid where a stud sits behind it. If you are still unsure you can drill a small test hole somewhere inconspicuous and look at the dust: brick, stone or concrete dust means masonry, while soft plaster followed by a void means plasterboard.

The distinction matters because the fixings are not interchangeable. A wall plug made for masonry is essentially useless in plasterboard, where it will spin, pull right out and fail. Plasterboard anchors, equally, just don’t work for solid brick.

Finding a Stud in Plasterboard Walls

If your wall is plasterboard, getting at least one fixing into a stud is the strongest thing you can do, since a stud will hold far more than an anchor in the board alone.

A basic stud finder costs around £10 to £20. Run it horizontally across the wall where the frame will sit, mark the two edges of each stud it detects, and aim for the centre line between them. If you do not have one, the knock test works but is less reliable: the wall sounds duller over a stud. Studs sit roughly 400mm to 600mm apart, so once you have found one you can measure across to find the next.

For a heavy piece, two fixings into the same stud is fine as long as you space them vertically by at least 100mm. For frames under 10kg, one fixing into the stud and one into a plasterboard anchor to the side works well, giving you both strength and some freedom over where the frame sits.

Choosing the Right Fixings for Plasterboard

However, it might be the case that the studs aren’t in the right place for where you want to hang your frame, and so you may want to hang the frame directly from the plasterboard. When it comes to plasterboard, never reach for a standard masonry plug. It slips into the hollow section and can come out almost immediately.

Use an anchor designed to spread its load across the back face of the board: a plastic butterfly plug, a spring toggle, or a heavy-duty cavity anchor, each of which expands behind the board to resist being pulled out. The weight they hold depends on the type and on how thick the plasterboard is, which you can find out online or in-store before buying, or using the packaging if you already have some. A basic butterfly plug might be rated for only a few kilograms, while a heavy-duty cavity toggle can hold 20kg or more. Keeping to the three-times rule, a frame over 10kg wants anchors rated for at least 30kg between them.

For the heaviest frames on a plasterboard wall, a French Cleat (which we going into more detail on below) beats any single anchor, because it spreads the load across its full width and across several fixings at once.

Choosing the Right Fixings for Masonry

In solid walls you have a few options: matched plastic wall plugs with the right screw, masonry screwbolts such as Thunderbolts that screw straight into a pre-drilled hole, or cavity fixings if the wall has a void behind it. Which you choose depends on the wall and the load.

For most domestic brick or stone, a plastic wall plug with a correctly matched screw is reliable, provided you size it to the wall and the weight and follow the maker's load ratings. The important detail is to match the plug to the right drill bit, so the hole is the same diameter as the plug and the plug grips firmly. A hole drilled too large is the quickest way to a fixing that turns and pulls out. Plug colours follow a standard size code rather than a quality scale, so choose by the size and load rating you actually need rather than by colour.

Insert the plug, drive the screw, and tighten until it is snug with no wobble. Do not over-tighten, as this can split the plug and weaken the hold. For very heavy frames, or in soft or crumbly brick, step up to a masonry screwbolt or a proper expansion anchor, which spread the load more widely and are worth the extra cost.

Why Two Fixings Are Better Than One

Two fixings do two jobs at once: they share the weight, and they stop the frame twisting. A frame hung from a single point will swing and sit crooked, and even if it never falls, it will never quite look right and be a constant source of annoyance whenever you look at the frame and have to keep correcting it.

For a frame on D-rings and cord, the two wall fixings sit level with each other and spaced apart horizontally, which is what keeps the frame from rotating and holds it square to the wall. With mirror plates or a cleat, you also gain vertical support that pins the frame flat. Either way, mark both points, check them with a spirit level, and fit both before you hang anything. The few extra minutes save the irritation of a frame that hangs slightly off true.

For pieces wider than about 600mm, it is worth spreading the fixings further apart still, or using a picture rail or a cleat that runs much of the width. That is standard practice for large works in galleries, and the same logic holds at home.

The Hanging Hardware on the Frame Itself

A frame can only hang as well as the hardware fixed to it. Traditionally, custom frames included D rings with a cord as standard. That’s because our customers find them much quicker and easier to get hanging with, and are a great option for lighter frames.

For heavier pieces, however, different hanging options, such as mirror plates, give more security. Mirror plates are metal plates fixed to the back of the frame, usually a pair or more, each with its own screw into the wall, so the weight passes through a rigid connection rather than relying on the cord. Whatever the hardware, check it is screwed into solid timber rather than into the thin backing board or a veneered edge. If the back will not take a secure screw, the mounting area needs reinforcing with a little extra timber, which a good framer does as a matter of course. If you are fitting hardware to a frame you already own, look at the back honestly before you trust it with weight.

French Cleats Are Ideal for Maximum Security

A French cleat is two lengths of timber or sometimes metal, each bevelled at a matching 45-degree angle, that interlock when one is fixed to the wall and the other to the frame. The frame simply hangs on the wall piece, with no wire or cord in the equation, and the angle pulls it gently back towards the wall so it sits flat.

It is the method of choice for very heavy frames, valuable pieces, and anything you expect to move around, which is also why it is standard for large works in galleries and museums. The wall piece is fixed with several heavy-duty fixings into studs or masonry; the frame piece is fitted across the top of the back so the bevels meet. To hang the frame, you lower it until the two lock together.

For a frame past 15kg, or one that carries real sentimental or financial weight, a cleat is the most reassuring option there is, and it is far simpler to fit than it looks.

When to Call a Professional

For most frames this is all quite a straightforward process: with a  frame under 10kg, an easy wall, a drill and a bit of care, and you can do the job yourself and enjoy getting it right. And it’s genuinely satisfying, which is a great sense of achievement.

Some jobs, though, are worth calling in help for. If a frame is very heavy, irreplaceable, or simply valuable enough that you would rather not gamble, a picture-hanging specialist will assess the wall, choose the right fixings, and hang it properly. The cost is modest next to the piece itself, and the reassurance is worth a great deal. The same goes if you are unsure of your wall, have no stud finder, or would simply rather not drill. 

If a piece matters enough to frame properly, it matters enough to hang properly too.
